Baseball: Odom Registers 100th Hit as Scots Finish Up California Trip

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) registered his 100th career hit today as the Scots rounded out their California trip, with two games. The Scots played University of Minnesota-Morris again, falling 15-8 in eight innings and California Lutheran, dropping the game 10-0 in seven innings. Macalester is now 1-3.

The Cougars got out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings. Odom's 100th hit came in the bottom of the third, where he hit an RBI triple to bring home sophomore Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill). Then senior Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) hit an RBI single to bring in Odom and close the deficit to 3-2. However, the Cougars had a big fourth inning, taking a 13-2 lead. Macalester fought back, starting in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) hit a grand slam, bringing home first year Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School), junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), and senior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake). Then in the bottom of the sixth, Gumagay had an RBI single to bring in McCaskey. Wingard scored in the bottom of the seventh, to close the gap to 13-8. However, in the top of the eighth, the University of Minnesota-Morris scored two more runs, and the Scots fell 15-8. Gumagay was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Wingard was also 3-for-4 with two runs.

In game two against California Lutheran, the Kingsmen put up runs in the second, third, fourth, and seventh innings, to win 10-0. Junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) walked and Odom singled to center field, putting runners on first and third at the top of the third, but the Scots' next batter flew out to center field. Waddell also doubled at the top of the fifth. Odom went 2-for-3 against the Kingsmen.

The Scots' next game will be down in Arizona for the Tucson Invitational. Macalester will play Concordia Wisconsin in a double header. First pitch will be Saturday March 9 at 10:30 a.m. CST.
