ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team lost a non-conference game at the University of Northwestern, 9-1 Friday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Scots are now 1-4 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-2.
Solid pitching marked the early innings, as a Northwestern unearned run in the third was the only run scored through five full innings. In the top of the sixth, junior
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) led off with back-to-back singles. Junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) bunted the runners over to second and third, then senior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) delivered a single to plate Waddell and tie the score at 1-1. The Eagles restored their lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, then tallied six runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Scots had seven hits in the game, including two from Waddell, but were retired in order over the final three innings.
Sophomore right-hander
Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts and a walk. Junior pitcher
Ben Levinson (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk over two innings.
Macalester will head south to participate in the Tucson Invitational Mar. 9-16.
