St. Louis, MO – The Macalester Scots traveled to St. Louis, MO to take on host Webster University in the season opener for both teams. The Gorlocks defeated the Scots 84-71.
Macalester took the lead 4-3 on a layup from Mary Daley with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter. A jumper by Sydney Smith made it a one-point game 9-8. Webster finished the quarter on a 7-3 run and finished the quarter with a 16-11 lead.
The Gorlocks scored the opening bucket of the 2nd quarter and led by 7 points. The Scots responded with 6 straight points, including a 3-point field goal from Samantha Smith and it was a one-point game. Peyton Starks would make a free throw at the 3:13 mark of the 2nd quarter to give the Scots a one point lead 24-23. A driving layup by Nysa Gilchrist would give Webster a one point lead and a lead they would not relinquish. The Gorlocks would finish the quarter on an 8-4 run and took a 33-28 lead into the half.
The run would extend into the second half as the Gorlocks scored the first 4 points of the 3rd quarter. Samantha Smith thwarted the run with a 3-point field goal and the Scots trailed by 6. Mary Daley's two free throws kept the deficit at 6, with 3:02 remaining in the quarter, but Webster finished with a 14-7 stretch and led 60-47 through three.
Bethany Lancaster would score the first basket of the 4th quarter for Webster and the lead was 15. Peyton Starks would score 3 points and baskets by Samantha Smith, Daley and Jessica Sebbagh would pull the Scots within 7 with 6:54 to play, but that is as close as the Scots would get. Webster scored the next 10 points in the game and closed the game out 84-71.
Peyton Starks led the Scots with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Samantha Smith contributed 18 in her first game as a Scot and Katherine Norquist had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Emily Wilson scored 20 and Bethany Lancaster 15 for the Gorlocks, who shot 55% from the field as a team.
The Scots face Sewanee at 12:00 p.m. Sunday in the first game of the 4-team event hosted by Webster University in St. Louis.
