ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior guard
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) registered 24 points to lead the Macalester College women's basketball team to its first win of the season, 76-59 over Sewanee at the Webster University Tip-Off Classic Sunday afternoon at Grant Gymnasium. The Scots leave St. Louis with a 1-1 record on the weekend, while the Tigers are now 0-2.
Macalester opened the first quarter by scoring the first 10 points as a part of a 14-2 run, including six points from sophomore guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot). The lead was 17-5 when Sewanee closed with a 7-0 spree to make the score 17-12 Scots at the end of the quarter. After the Tigers pulled to within three, Macalester used a 14-4 run, capped by a three-pointer by first year forward
Samantha Smith (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), to take a commanding 33-21 advantage 2:15 before halftime. Again Sewanee finished strong, tallying nine of the last 11 points of the quarter to make the halftime score 35-30 Scots.
With the margin still five midway through the third quarter, Macalester registered 12 consecutive points, including eight from Starks, to lead 53-36 with 3:41 left in the quarter. But the Tigers used another run to end the quarter, tallying nine straight points to make the score 55-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Scots made sure that a late comeback would not happen, extending its lead to 19, 68-49 with a 13-1 run that included a three-pointer from senior guard
Jessica Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis). The lead would grow to as high as 20, as Macalester secured the win by out-scoring the Tigers 21-13 in the fourth quarter.
Starks, a native of St. Louis, scored 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Sydnee Smith finished with 14 points and seven boards, while sophomore guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) recorded 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Senior forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) led the Scots with 11 rebounds. Olivia Falvey paced Sewanee with 13 points.
Macalester opens its home schedule with a non-conference game against Martin Luther on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
