ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team faced Augsburg University in the final home match of the season. The Scots fought back in the final two sets but lost, 25-12, 27-25, 25-23 to drop to 12-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Augsburg improves to 16-12, 7-3 MIAC with the win.
After losing the first set, Macalester battled back from a 17-12 deficit in the second set with a 12-4 run to create set point, 24-21. The Auggies tallied the next three points to tie the score, then the Scots scored the next point for a 25-24 edge. But Augsburg notched three straight points to take the set, 27-25. First year
Ella Cohen-Richie (Chicago, Ill./Univ. Chicago Laboratory Schools) had three kills in the set to lead Macalester.
The third set also was close, with the Scots using three straight points, including a kill by senior outside hitter
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), to take a 21-20 lead. Again the Auggies responded by closing out the match with a 5-2 run to win, 25-23 for the sweep. Cohen-Richie and Preston each had three kills in the final set.
Cohen-Richie led Macalester with seven kills, with Preston adding six kills. Senior setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) registered 10 assists and 11 digs, while senior libero
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) paced the defense with 18 digs. Bri Van Well led all players with 14 kills for Augsburg.
After the match, Macalester honored its seven seniors at a part of Senior Night: Preston, Norton, Williams,
Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo),
Grace Galer (Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg),
Jill MacInnis (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and
Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen).
The Scots wrap up the 2024 season with a MIAC match at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 9. the first serve goes up at 5:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
