SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior guard
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) registered 32 points and nine rebounds to lead the Macalester College women's basketball team to a 64-62 victory at UW-Superior in a non-conference game Saturday night. The win is the third in a row for the Scots, who are now 3-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets suffer their first loss of the season and drop to 2-1.
After Starks scored eight points to help Macalester take a 13-12 lead after the first quarter, the Scots outscored UW-Superior, 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 33-24 advantage at halftime. Macalester closed the quarter with a 13-2 run that included nine points from Starks and four from senior forward

Still leading by nine later in the third quarter, the Scots used a pair of free throws from Starks and a three pointer by sophomore guard
Kendall Bernbaum (Dallas, Texas/Shelton School) to push their lead to 13, 45-32. The gap was still 10, 51-41 with 7:17 left in the fourth quarter, when the Yellowjackets mounted a comeback. A 13-7 run by the hosts made it a three-point game, 58-55, before baskets by Starks and sophomore guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) made the score 62-55 Scots with 1:25 left. Two free throws and a three-pointer by Katie Dobson brought the Yellowjackets to within two, then Hannah Hause made a layup following a Daley free throw to make it a one-point game, 63-62 with seven seconds on the clock. Daley made another free throw, and UW-Superior failed to score before time expired.
Starks made 12-of-22 of her shots from the floor and hit all seven of her free throws. She also led Macalester in rebounding with nine caroms. Norquist tallied a season-high 17 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Daley contributed seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Dobson led the Yellowjackets with 12 points.
Macalester is hosting the Twin Cities Invitational next weekend, Nov. 22-23 in the Leonard Center. Colorado College and Simpson play on Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by Macalester and North Central University at 8:00 p.m. The non-winners play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., with the winners playing at 2:00 p.m.
