STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Macalester College women's basketball team started fast and cruised to a 73-58 victory at Buena Vista University in a non-conference game Tuesday night in Siebens Fieldhouse. The win is the fourth in a row for the Scots, who are 4-1 on the season. The Beavers fall to 1-3.
In the first quarter Macalester turned a one-point lead into a 10-point bulge over the final four minutes to take a 25-15 advantage. Senior forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) scored five points in the 14-5 run that included a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Kendall Bernbaum (Dallas, Texas/Shelton School).
The Scots opened the second quarter with a 15-6 run over the first five minutes to take a commanding 40-21 lead. Senior guard
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) had four points in the run that saw six different players score, including a basket by sophomore forward
Brooke Boroughs (Monroe, Wash./Monroe) that ended the run. Buena Vista responded with an 8-2 run to make the halftime score 42-29 Scots. Macalester shot 69.2 percent from the field in the first quarter and 58.6 percent for the half.
With the lead still 13 points midway through the third quarter, a three from Bernbaum and baskets by Norquist and Starks gave the Scots a 20-point advantage, 54-34 with 4:16 on the clock. In the fourth quarter Macalester pushed the lead to as many as 26 points, 70-44, before the Beavers closed out the game on a 14-3 run to make the final score, 73-58 Scots.
Macalester ended up shooting 45.5 percent from the field for the game, its best field goal percentage of the season. Starks finished with 18 points and seven rebounds while making 7-of-12 from the floor. Norquist tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards to go with six assists. Bernbaum finished with a career-best nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while sophomore guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) contributed six points and seven assists. Senior guard
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) recorded six points and three steals. Bradi Krager led the Beavers with 14 points.
Macalester is hosting the Twin Cities Invitational next weekend, Nov. 22-23 in the Leonard Center. Colorado College and Simpson play on Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by Macalester and North Central University at 8:00 p.m. The non-winners play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., with the winners playing at 2:00 p.m.
