Men’s Soccer: Scots Fall to Augsburg in Regular-Season Finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team lost to Augsburg University, 2-1 in the final game of the 2024 regular season. The Scots, who clinched a berth in the MIAC Playoffs last week, are now 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Auggies improve to 11-3-5 overall and 5-1-4 in the MIAC.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) picked up the ball at midfield, dribbled through multiple defenders and scored in the 48th minute for a 1-0 Macalester lead. Eight minutes later, Muhammed Keita received a pass from Joseph Swallen and scored from 15 yards out to tie the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute. Then in the 79th minute, an errant cross through the Scots' penalty area skipped to Remus Repcak, who blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the goal for a 2-1 Augsburg lead.

Less than two minutes after Repcak's goal, Macalester had a golden chance to tie the score when a handball in the penalty area was called on the Auggies. But Augsburg goalkeeper Frankie Pinto dove to his right to make the save on the ensuing penalty kick and keep Augsburg in the lead. The Scots had another chance in the 85th minute when junior defender Nick Kent (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) headed a free kick just wide of the goal.

Macalester held a 20-9 advantage in shots and put nine shots on target compared to five for Augsburg. Senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) registered three saves for the Scots, while Pinto made eight saves for Augsburg.

Macalester won't know its playoff fate until the completion of tomorrow's MIAC games. The Scots can get the No. 4 seed if Saint John's defeats or draws with Carleton in Northfield. A Knights' win gives Macalester the No. 6 seed. The MIAC Playoffs begin on Monday, Nov. 4.
