Men’s Soccer: Macalester Falls in Double Overtime at Augsburg in MIAC Playoffs

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A goal six minutes into the second overtime period gave Augsburg University a 1-0 win over the Macalester College men's soccer team in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs Monday night at Edor Nelson Field. The Scots, seeded sixth, drop to 12-6 on the season, while the Auggies (12-3-5) advance to the semifinals against St. Olaf on Thursday.

Macalester's best chance to score came late in the second half, when a cross from junior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) found senior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) at the back post. But Haenicke's header sailed just wide, keeping the game scoreless.

In the first overtime period, senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made three saves to deny Augsburg. Then in the second overtime, Joseph Swallen fired a shot from 20 yards out that was saved by Price. The rebound went right to Mizael Harris, who scored from 10 yards out to end the game.

Price finished with nine saves for the Scots, as Augsburg held a narrow 14-12 advantage in shots taken.

Macalester, which was ranked 29th in the NCAA Power Index last week, will await the NCAA Tournament selection announcement to see if its season continues.
