ST. PAUL, Minn. – A pair of first-half goals allowed the Macalester College women's soccer team to defeat UW-Superior, 2-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. With the win, the Scots improve to 4-4-3 on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 7-6.
Macalester opened the scoring in the 17th minute. First year forward
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) sent a ball from the right side into the penalty area, where sophomore defender
Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) sent it into the goal on her first touch for a 1-0 lead.
Then in the 34th minute, sophomore midfielder
Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) won a loose ball at midfield and passed the ball up to sophomore forward
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston). Hanson sent a through ball down the right to sophomore forward
Avery Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), who scored from 10 yards out for a two-goal advantage.
Niya Wilson scored for the Yellowjackets in the 87th minute off a rebound from a shot off the crossbar, but the Scots were able to close out the win. The teams each took nine shots for the game, with UW-Superior putting eight on target compared to four for Macalester. Senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Ryan (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) registered seven saves for the Scots in the win.
Macalester returns to MIAC play with a game at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 12. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
