DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team used a pair of first-half goals to earn a 3-1 MIAC victory at College of St. Scholastica Saturday afternoon at Kenny Harkins Field. The Scots improve to 5-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference, while the Saints fall to 0-11-3 overall and 0-6 in the MIAC.
Macalester opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game. Junior midfielder
Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) sent a long ball from midfield towards the penalty area, where it deflected off a defender and into the goal. Fifteen minutes later, a cross from the left side found senior midfielder
Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) in front of the goal. Her shot was saved, but first year midfielder
Reese Preston (Los Altos, Calif./Summit Prep) knocked in the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Both goals are the first career goals for Lemov and Preston.
Less than two minutes after Preston's goal, St. Scholastica got on the scoreboard with a goal by Jordyn Randa in the 23rd minute. In the second half, the Scots netted an insurance goal in the 76th minute, when a cross by sophomore forward
Avery Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) was finished by first year forward
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) for a 3-1 lead. The goal was Hamilton's team-leading fifth of the season.
Macalester held a 23-12 advantage in shots, putting 11 on frame compared to six for the Saints. Senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Ryan (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) registered five saves to preserve the win.
Macalester hosts Carleton in a key MIAC match on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
