ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought match to Carleton College, 1-0 in a MIAC contest Wednesday evening at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 5-5-3 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play, while the Knights improve to 11-1-3, 6-0-2 MIAC.
After a scoreless first half, both teams created scoring chances in the second half. Senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Ryan (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) made a pair of saves in the first seven minutes of the second half, then sophomore midfielder
Georgia Lewin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) had a chance from 18 yards out that was deflected by a defender in the 53rd minute. Two minutes later, junior midfielder
Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and senior midfielder
Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) both sent shots just over the top of the goal.
In the 69th minute, a pass by Dylan Baker sent Kathryn Kresse down the right side. Kresse took a shot from 12 yards out into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Momentum swung in Carleton's favor, as Macalester was unable to muster another shot the rest of the way.
Ryan had a strong game in goal with eight saves for the Scots, who were outshot, 14-6 for the game.
Macalester hosts St. Catherine University in another MIAC game on Saturday, Oct. 19. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
