Men’s Soccer: Scots Stumble Against St. Olaf

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three goals just 4:30 apart in the second half were too much to overcome, as the Macalester College men's soccer team lost to St. Olaf, 5-1 in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Oles improve to 8-3-1, 4-0 MIAC.

A little over five minutes into the match, Macalester took an early lead. A cross from the right to the back post by sophomore midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) was headed back across the goal line by sophomore forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) to senior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy), who nodded the ball into the goal for a 1-0 advantage. It was Haenicke's 10th goal in 12 games this season.

The lead held until Caspar Olseth tied the score for the Oles in the 25th minute. Forty-three seconds before halftime, a foul was called on Macalester in the penalty area and a penalty kick was awarded. Shea Bechtel converted the kick for a 2-1 St. Olaf lead.

Early in the second half, Bechtel scored again in the 51st minute, igniting a three-goal spurt over the next 4:30 to put the game out of reach, 5-1. Dimitri Nair (54th minute) and Ryan Bechtel (55th minute) had the other goals.

The Scots held an 11-8 advantage in shots, with both teams putting eight shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) registered three saves for Macalester.

Next up for the Scots is a MIAC game at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
