ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team fraced UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls in a tri-match Saturday evening at UW-River Falls' don Page Arena. The Scots are now 11-14 on the season.
Against UW-Whitewater (20-3), the Scots fought hard to set the tone in the first set, keeping it even throughout, but ultimately fell on a four point Warhawks run, 25-17. Macalester was led by junior Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./ Olathe West) with five kills and two aces from senior Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./ Eden Prairie).Â
Another four kills from Rahe led the team in the second set, but it was not enough to overcome the Warhawks' attack. The Scots recorded 16 digs in the set, headlined by junior Sarah Bohrer (Minneapolis, Minn./ Edina) with five and senior Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/ Yes Prep Northbrook) with four. That dig total was the most for any team in any set this match. Macalester fell behind early in the third set and couldn't reduce the deficit, making the final set scores 25-17, 25-18, and 25-13. Rahe led the team with 12 total kills and senior Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./ Southern Door) recorded 12 assists.
In the match against the host Falcons (11-18), Macalester started well and had set point in the first set, 24-23 after a block by senior right side
Grace Galer (Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg) and sophomore outside hitter
MiLani Terrell (Cypress, Texas/Tomball Memorial). But UW-River Falls tallied the next three points to take the set, 26-24. Terrell and Rahe each had four kills in the set. The second set also was tight, with the Falcons breaking a 20-20 tie with four straight points. The Scots fended off set point four times, including a kill by senior outside hitter
Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen), and had set point for themselves at 25-24. Again UW-River Falls responded with three straight points to win, 27-25. Preston led the Scots with four kills in the set.
The Falcons controlled the third set throughout and clinched the match with a 25-19 win. Wooten paced Macalester with three kills in the set. Preston and Rahe each had seven kills in the match, with Terrell and Wooten adding six kills apiece. Norton and sophomore setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) each delivered 10 assists, with Morrow contributing 16 digs. Williams notched 19 digs to lead the defense, and sophomore middle blocker
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) registered three blocks.
Macalester resumes MIAC play on Friday, Nov. 1 with a home game against Hamline University. The MIAC match begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
