Football: Big Plays Doom Scots in Loss to Gustavus

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four touchdowns of at least 41 yards proved too much to overcome, as the Macalester College football team lost a cross-divisional game to Gustavus Adolphus, 36-7 Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots drop to 0-6 overall, while the Gusties improve to 4-2.

The first big play came midway through the first quarter, when Jacob Ginskey connected with Caden Kleinschmidt on a 49-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead. Macalester, whose first drive went 40 yards but ended after a failed fourth-down conversion, answered with an 11-play, 74-yard drive that included a 22-yard run by senior running back Josh Bulski (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and was capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by first year quarterback Deijon Feliciano (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) that tied the score at 7-7.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Ginskey hit Kleinschmidt for a 41-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead for Gustavus. Then in the second quarter, the duo hooked up again, this time for a 76-yard touchdown for a 21-7 lead. The Gusties added another score near the end of the second quarter to take a 27-7 advantage. Senior defensive lineman Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) blocked the extra point. After Feliciano threw his second interception of the game to give Gustavus the ball at midfield, the Gusties moved the ball to the Scots' 26-yard line. That set up a 43-yard field goal by Jack Sieben that made the halftime score 30-7 Gustavus.

Macalester's defense kept the Gusties' offense from scoring in the second half, but the Scots' offense couldn't find a rhythm and was forced to punt twice while turning the ball over on downs twice after halftime. The only points that were scored in the second half came on an interception by Ty Glaser, who lateraled the ball to Eric Lyons Jr. for a 79-yard touchdown return.

Defensively, the Scots registered four sacks, with senior defensive lineman Xavier Pittman (Spring, Texas/Spring), junior defensive lineman Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) and junior linebacker Issam Rafidi (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) each having a sack, and senior linebacker Noah Bresson (Homosassa, Fla./Crystal River) and sophomore defensive back Jason Weaver (Roselle Park, N.J./Pingry) sharing a sack. Junior defensive back Jacob Degnan (Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) and first year defensive lineman Jake Ray (Houston, Texas/Tompkins) led the defense with six tackles apiece.

Feliciano threw for 111 yards and rushed for 22 yards, with Bulski rushing for 25 yards and catching five passes. Senior Receiver Henry Clymer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/George Washington) caught eight passes for 40 yards.

Macalester returns to Skyline Division play with a home game against Concordia College on Saturday, Oct. 26. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
