Men’s Soccer: Scots Edged by Carleton in Tight MIAC Match

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team battled Carleton College in a close MIAC match that ended in Carleton's favor, 1-0 Tuesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Knights move to 8-3-3, 3-3 MIAC.

After a scoreless first half that saw the teams combine to take three shots, the action heated up in the second half. In the 56th minute, sophomore midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) took a shot from 20 yards out that was deflected by a defender over the top of the goal. Then in the 65th minute, Carleton's Dylan Stiffler sent a header off a free kick towards the Scots' goal. Senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made the save, but the rebound went in the air right to Owen Flanagan, who headed the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Knights' lead.

Macalester created several scoring chances down the stretch. Blattman sent a cross into the penalty area towards the back post that was caught by Carleton goalkeeper Daniel Linder in the 73rd minute. Senior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) had a chance from a sharp angle in the 80th minute that was saved by Linder. A free kick from 25 yards out by sophomore midfielder Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) was labeled for the left side of the goal before Linder dove to his right to parry the ball wide. Then with 30 seconds to play, Haenicke beat a defender and dribbled on the end line before centering the ball to sophomore forward Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), who was open in front of the goal. But Da couldn't pull the trigger and the ball was cleared.

Price registered two saves, one in each half, while Linden finished with three saves.

The Scots return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 with a MIAC game at Saint Mary's University. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
