WINONA, Minn. – Senior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) registered a goal just before halftime to lead the Macalester College men's soccer team past Saint Mary's University, 1-0 Wednesday night at Ochrymowycz Field. The Scots are now 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Cardinals drop to 7-8-1, 1-6-1 MIAC.
With time winding down in the first half, sophomore forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) dribbled about 70 yards into Saint Mary's territory and sent the ball into the penalty area. The pass hit a couple defenders and went right to Haenicke, who scored from 15 yards out for a 1-0 lead. The goal is Haenicke's team-leading 12th of the season and league-leading sixth game-winning goal this year.
Macalester created multiple scoring chances in the second half but were unable to extend the lead. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) registered three of his four saves in the second half to preserve his eighth shutout of the season. The Scots built a 25-5 advantage in shots and put 11 on frame compared to four for Saint Mary's.
Next up for Macalester is a MIAC game at Hamline University on Saturday, Oct. 26. The match starts at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
