ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team traveled to take on the College of Saint Benedict for a MIAC match Friday night at Claire Lynch Hall. The Scots lost in four sets, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13 to fall to 9-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Bennies improve to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.
After dropping the first set, 25-13, Macalester recovered in the second set. Trailing early, the Scots rebounded to lead by as many as four, 20-16 before Saint Benedict came back to tie the score at 21-21. Kills by first year outside hitter
Ella Cohen-Richie (Chicago, Ill./Univ. of Chicago Laboratory Schools) and junior right side
Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe), plus a service ace from senior setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door), sparked a 4-1 run that clinched the set, 25-22. Cohen-Richie ended up with five kills in the set.
In the third set, Macalester was down by one, 16-15 when the Bennies tallied six straight points and nine of the final 13 points to win the set, 25-19. Senior outside hitter
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) had three kills in the set. The fourth set belonged to the hosts, as Saint Benedict registered 17 kills compared to six for the Scots in a 25-13 win.
Cohen-Richie registered a team-high 10 kills for the match, followed by Preston with eight. Norton recorded 14 assists and sophomore setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) added 10 assists. Senior libero
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) led the defense with 19 digs.
Macalester continues conference play with a home game against St. Catherine University on Saturday, Oct. 12. The first serve goes up at 5:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
