Women’s Soccer: Macalester Comes Back to Tie Bethel, 1-1

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit to tie with Bethel University, 1-1 in a MIAC game Tuesday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The result gives the Scots a 3-3-3 record overall, including a 1-1-2 mark in the conference. The Royals are now 6-4-1, 2-1-1 MIAC.

After a scoreless first half, Malia Beilby scored from the right side on a sharp angle in the 55th minute to put Bethel on top, 1-0. In the 70th minute, the Scots came close to knotting the score when a shot by first year Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) hit the crossbar. With five minutes left, a long free kick by junior defender Becky Mulcahy (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was deflected by sophomore defender Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and knocked into the goal by junior midfielder Sophie Jones (Burien, Wash./Highline) to tie the game at 1-1. It was Jones' first goal of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Georgia Lewin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) put a shot on goal that was saved in the 87th minute for the best scoring chance down the stretch before the game ended in a tie. Macalester was out-shot, 20-8 for the game, with first year goalkeeper Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) registering a career-best eight saves. Making her second career start, Salazar had several clutch saves, including on multiple breakaways.

The Scots host St. Olaf in another MIAC game on Saturday, Oct. 5. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
