ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team wins its second game in as many days, taking down the Oles of St. Olaf in front of the home crowd. The Scots went up early and never looked back, winning 58-47. The Scots improve to 8-7 (5-6 MIAC).
After the Oles put up the first basket, junior guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) kicked off a 12-0 run for the Scots. Fellow junior guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) tallied six points in the run while junior guard
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door), and first year guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) tallied the other points. St. Olaf fought back but the Scots maintained the lead, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter. Starks kicked off the second quarter with a successful and-one. The Oles put up one bucket before Macalester's dominance emerged again, with a 10-0 run. Junior guard
Camille Samuel (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) closed out the run for the Scots. Starks put one more basket for good measure to take a 31-17 lead into halftime.
In the third, Norquist tallied the first six points for Macalester to maintain a 15-point lead. Then Norton drained six of the next eight points for the Scots, to lead 45-28, with 3:05 on the clock. The Oles pushed back against the Scots, closing the gap to 45-38 to begin the fourth quarter. Senior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) drained an important three-pointer to begin the fourth and propel the Scots' momentum. Smith and Starks each put up two baskets and Norton sank both her free throws to defeat St. Olaf, 58-47. The Scots take a clean sweep, winning all three games against the Oles this season.
Starks led the team with 19 points and recorded two steals. Norquist totaled 14 points and Norton tacked on 10. First year guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) led the team with six rebounds. Norton and Norquist also each registered a block. The team shot 45.5% from the field.
Macalester's next game is Saturday Jan 20. The Scots host St. Scholastica at 1:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
