ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) nabbed 25 points and 13 boards this evening, including the go-ahead basket in overtime. Macalester women's basketball battled Hamline tonight in a back-and-forth matchup. Macalester went 4-for-4 in overtime from the line to secure a 62-57 victory. The Scots move to 7-7 (4-6 MIAC), while the Pipers fall to 6-8 (4-6 MIAC).
Junior guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) sank the first two buckets for the Scots, and first year guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) drained a three to take a slight 7-6 lead three and a half minutes into the game. The Scots outshot the Pipers 9-5 the rest of the quarter, including a successful and-one by first year guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) to lead 16-11 after 10 minutes. In the second, Macalester maintained the lead for four minutes before the Pipers tied the game at 22. Starks, Norquist, and sophomore forward
Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) led the Scots to a slight 30-28 lead at the break.
In the third, Hamline was able to take the lead with 4:21 on the clock, 34-32. However, the Scots wouldn't let the Pipers pull away. With 40 seconds left in the quarter, senior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) sank an important three to trail 40-39 and keep the Scots close. Norquist, Starks, Smith, and first year guard
Acacia Edmond (Houston, Texas/Shadow Creek) helped Macalester battle to tie the game at 48 with 4:04 left. The Pipers would pull ahead slightly, 53-48 with 1:35 on the clock. Daley put up a basket to close the gap further. Starks then stepped up to the line, going 4-for-4 in the final 30 seconds to tie the game 54-54 and force overtime.
Overtime began with Hamline's Yasmeen Abed completing an and-one to go up 57-54. However, from there, the Scots iced out the Pipers. Norquist tallied the first bucket and Starks hit the go-ahead basket, 58-57 with 51 seconds left. Daley and Starks drained their free throws and Macalester came out on top 62-57.
The Scots shot 40% from the field and drained 80% of their free throws. Starks registered a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Daley led the team in assists Norquist also hit double digits with 12 points.
The Scots' next game will be Wednesday January 17. The Scots host St. Olaf in a MIAC contest. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
