Men’s Soccer: Edelman’s Late Goal Secures Tie with St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn.  –  A goal by first year midfielder Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) in the 90th minute allowed the Macalester College men's soccer team to earn a 1-1 tie at St. Olaf Saturday afternoon at Rolf Melby Field. The 21st-ranked Scots are now to 6-1-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference, while the Oles are 5-3-1, 3-0-1 MIAC.

Junior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) kicked off the game with a shot up high, forcing a save from Ole goalkeeper Peter Forseth. Senior forward Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) and sophomore defender Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) created chances in the half as well. Junior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) saved four chances, denying St. Olaf and keeping the game level at the break.

The Scots put pressure on the Oles early in the second half, creating opportunities. Sophomore midfielders Alex Beck-Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and Tanguy Lesegretain (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills), first year forward Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), Haenicke, and Kent came close but had their attempts saved. The Oles were able to get one past the Scots in the 62nd minute to take the lead. Macalester never gave up and Edelman blasted the ball into the net, just seconds before the final whistle to draw 1-1 with the Oles.

Macalester returns to Macalester Stadium on Oct. 7. The Scots kickoff at 2:30 p.m. against St. Scholastica.
