ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team competed in a MIAC competition against St. Scholastica this afternoon in front of its home crowd. The Scots set the tone early and came out on top 3-0. Macalester improves to 7-1-4 (3-1-2 MIAC).
The Scots' junior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) set the tone early for Macalester, taking a shot just over a minute into play. Off a corner, senior midfielder
Sam Menicke (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish) headed the ball down but was kept just out by the St. Scholastica goalkeeper, Liam Lothian. In the 32
nd minute, Haenicke showed his speed getting past the last defender and around the goalkeeper to fire the ball into the net and give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Haenicke was assisted by first year forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield). The Scots continued to apply hard pressure the rest of the half, maintaining the lead into the break.
Senior forward
Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) doubled the lead in the 49
th minute, blasting a rocket of shot past the keeper from 20 yards out. Sciortino then added a third in the 52
nd, assisted by first year
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove). The Scots dominated, taking 18 shots in the half and out shooting their opponents 27 to 6. Junior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made two saves in the second half and preserved the shutout for a 3-0 victory.
Macalester travels to Northfield to play the Carleton Knights on Wednesday Oct 11. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
