Men’s Soccer: Macalester’s Second Half Rally Cut Short by No. 7 Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn.  –  The Macalester men's soccer team competed against No. 7-ranked Carleton this afternoon, in a tough MIAC matchup. The game was close but the Scots came out on the losing end of a 2-1 score line. Macalester moves to 7-2-4 (3-2-2 MIAC) while Carleton improves to 12-1 (4-1 MIAC).

Junior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made an incredible save in the 5th minute, diving to the right to save a turnaround shot from the Knights' Trevor Jones. However, on the resulting corner, Carleton was able to squeeze the ball into the net, taking a 1-0 lead. First year midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) looked to answer back in the seventh minute, but had his shot saved. Both sides battled hard the remainder of the half, allowing just the one goal in the first 45 minutes.

Sophomore defender Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) made an important block just seconds after the second half whistle to deny the Knights' early opportunity. There was a bit of back-and-forth action before the Scots found the equalizer. In the 56th minute, senior defender Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School) had his shot blocked, but the deflection went right to junior midfielder Ian Staresinic (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) who slotted the ball through traffic into the bottom left corner. However, the Knights retook the lead in the 72nd minute. Junior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) created multiple chances up top, with his best attempt hitting the post in the 81st minute. Minutes later, first year forward Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) had his close-range header just saved off the line by the Knights' goalkeeper, while first year midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) had his late freekick saved. The Scots fell 2-1. Price made seven saves in the game to keep it close.

The Scots' next match will be Tuesday Oct 17. Macalester will head to Superior, Wis. for its last non-conference game, against UW-Superior. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
