Men’s Soccer: Late Goals Push Macalester Past Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa. – The Macalester men's soccer team traveled to Iowa today to face the Storm of Simpson College. The battle was close, but the Scots' relentless pressure prevailed and Macalester claimed victory 4-2. The Scots improve to 2-0.

Just six minutes into the game, senior Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) slid the ball into the back of the net, assisted by junior Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy). However, the Scots' lead was short lived as the Storm tied the game at one in the seventh minute. The teams battled back-and-forth, until the Scots reclaimed the lead in the 31st minute. First year Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) netted his first collegiate goal, sending a direct free kick past Simpson's goalie to the top left corner. Yet the Storm leveled the game again in the 33rd minute, and the teams went into halftime with a 2-2 scoreline.

In the second half, the Scots pushed forward and forced the Storm's goalkeeper to make seven saves in the half, taking 13 shots. Macalester was rewarded in the 86th minute. Blattman scored his second goal of the game, giving Macalester the go-ahead goal. Sciortino and junior Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) assisted. In the 88th minute, first year Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored his first collegiate goal, chipping the ball over the keeper, and securing the 4-2 victory.

Macalester's next game will be Wednesday Sept 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Scots will host University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Macalester Stadium.
