Women’s Soccer: Macalester Prevails Over Bethel

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On a clear night at Macalester Stadium, the Macalester women's soccer team competed against conference opponent Bethel. First year goalkeeper Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) played a crucial role in the 1-0 victory. The Scots improve to 5-4 (3-1 MIAC).

Bethel put the pressure on Macalester in the first half, limiting the Scots' offensive chances. Heuga made her first big save in the 17th minute, making a daring leap to deny the Royals. Heuga made five more saves in the half to keep the score level heading into the break, including stopping a ball headed into the lower left corner in the 33rd minute. First year Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) took a chance for the Scots just before the break, but had her attempt saved.

First year Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) created two chances early in the second half for the Scots. Heuga continued to be a critical component for Macalester in denying the Royals, recording two more saves. The Scots were able to capitalize on an opportunity in the 68th minute. Sophomore Becky Mulcahy (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) made a quick pass to senior Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), who made a penetrating pass to first year Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston). Hanson then blasted the ball into the net, securing the game winning goal. Macalester maintained possession in their offensive half to deny the Royals a chance to tie, and take the 1-0 win.

The Scots' next game will be Saturday Sept 30. Macalester takes on conference opponent St. Olaf on the road in Northfield. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
