ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team battled to a draw this evening against Bethel, in a MIAC contest at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 6-1-3 (2-1-1 MIAC). Bethel is now 3-3-1 (1-2-1 MIAC).
Junior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) started immediately putting pressure on the Royals, with one shot hitting the crossbar early in the match. Then senior defender
Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School) and first year forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) forced the Royals' goalkeeper Juan Valdivia Cortes to make a pair of saves. In the 16
th minute, Valdivia Cortes received a yellow card for a tackle on Frantz, awarding Macalester a penalty. Senior forward
Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) stepped up and placed the ball into the bottom right corner, to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. However, in the 44
th minute, Bethel's Abdallah Youssef tied the game.
The Scots continued to create offensive chances in the second half. Haenicke and first year
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) forced saves from the Valdivia Cortes. Junior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made four saves in the second half, seven total in the match, to earn the tie, 1-1.
The Scots' next game will be Saturday Sept 30 at 1:00 p.m. Macalester heads to Northfield for a conference match against St. Olaf.
