Volleyball: Macalester Concludes Play at Aurora Tournament

AURORA, Ill. – The Macalester College volleyball team played two more matches at the Aurora University Tournament on Saturday, losing to the host Spartans and Cornell College at Thornton Gymnasium. The Scots are now 0-3 on the young season after playing three teams who qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2022.

Against Aurora, Macalester started well offensively with a .318 hitting percentage in the first set before falling, 25-19. Junior Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) recorded five kills in the set for the Scots. The second set was close until the Spartans scored seven straight points to break a 13-13 tie en route to a 25-16 win. Macalester tied the score in the third set, 16-16 and trailed 20-18, only to have Aurora close with a 5-2 run to win the final set, 25-20. Preston, who added four kills in the third set, finished with a team-best 11 kills. Sophomore Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) contributed seven kills, while first year Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) delivered 17 assists. Juniors Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) and Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door), and first year MiLani Terrell (Cypress, Texas/Tomball Memorial) each had six digs.

In the final match of the weekend, Macalester lost to Cornell College, 25-18, 25-15, 25-22. The Scots made a late push at the end of the third set with two kills by Preston and a block by Terrell that made the score 24-22. But Cornell closed out the match with a kill to win the final set and the match. Preston again had 11 kills to lead Macalester, with Rahe putting away nine kills. Morrow had 17 assists and eight digs, while sophomore Sarah Bohrer (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) registering 12 digs to pace the defense.

The Scots continue their non-conference schedule with a match at Martin Luther on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
