ST. PETER, Minn. – No. 18 Macalester men's soccer traveled to St. Peter, Minn. this afternoon for a MIAC matchup against No. 10 – ranked Gustavus Adolphus. The Scots fought hard until the final whistle, but fell 1-0 to the Gusties. Macalester is now 4-1-2 (1-1 MIAC).
The battle started right from the first whistle. First year
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had a shot saved by the Gusties goalkeeper in the 11
th minute. Senior
Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School) and junior
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) also had shots saved in the first half, as the Scots worked offensively. In the 44
th minute, junior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made his fourth save of the half, keeping the game tied going into halftime.
The Gusties and the Scots went back-and-forth in the second half, creating chances. Sophomore
Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) and Haenicke both had shots saved before Frantz came close to opening the scoring in the 62
nd minute, hitting the post. The Scots continued to press throughout the half, however, the Gusties were able to find the back of the net in the 89
th minute and Macalester fell 1-0.
The Scots will take a break from conference play in their next match. Macalester will host Central College on Tuesday Sept 19 at 4:30 p.m.
