Men’s Soccer: No. 18 Macalester Topples Saint John’s, 5-1

ST. PAUL, Minn.  – No. 18 Macalester men's soccer hosted Saint John's for the first MIAC game of the season. The Scots dominated the game and defeated the Johnnies 5-1. Macalester remains undefeated at 4-0-2 (1-0 MIAC).

The Scots came out with high energy creating offensive chances quickly. After great buildup play by the Scots, first year Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) slid the ball into the back of the net in the 14th minute, assisted by fellow first year Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) and junior Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy). In the 19th minute, a handball in the box by the Johnnies gave the Scots a penalty. Sophomore Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) stepped up and buried it, doubling Macalester's lead. The Scots put a third on the board before halftime.  First year Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) registered his first collegiate goal, assisted by fellow first years Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Blattman.

Macalester continued its offensive presence in the second half. While the Johnnies were able to get a goal back in the 74th minute, the Scots answered immediately. In the 76th minute, Haenicke blasted the ball past the Johnnies' goalkeeper, assisted by sophomore Alex Beck-Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and first year Jack Freimann (Denver, Colo./Northfield). To round out the scoring, and securing a 5-1 victory, first year Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) took a free kick and placed it perfectly into the net, for his first collegiate goal.

The Scots' next game will be Saturday Sept 16. Macalester heads to St. Peter, Minn. to face No. 10 Gustavus in another MIAC matchup, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
