Men’s Soccer: Scots Defeat Luther; Coach Olson’s 100th Victory

ST. PAUL, Minn.  – On a beautiful day in Macalester Stadium on the newly named John Leaney Field, the Macalester men's soccer team hosted Luther College.  The Scots dominated the game, posting 27 shots, and defeating the Norse 3-0. Macalester is now 3-0-2.

The Scots immediately put pressure on the Norse by earning a corner. Senior Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) took the corner, and perfectly curled the ball into the far corner, giving the Scots a 1-0 lead. Multiple Scots including first years Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) forced Luther's goalkeeper to make six in the first half. The Scots maintained a good amount of possession in their offensive half, and led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Scots came out with the same energy, with junior Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) taking chances at the net. In the 51st minute, Da scored his first collegiate goal, sliding it past the Norse keeper to double the lead, assisted by Haenicke and junior Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard). In the 70th minute, first year Jack Freimann (Denver, Colo./Northfield) registered his first collegiate goal, heading it into the back of the net, sealing the Macalester victory.

The Scots' head coach Gregg Olson registered his 100th career win this afternoon. Coach Olson has been at the helm for Macalester for 11 seasons.

In their next game, the Scots will begin conference play. Macalester will host Saint John's on Wednesday Sept 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
