ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team took to the field for the first time this season, hosting the Firebirds of Carthage College. The Scots walked away victorious, scoring three and blanking their opponents. Macalester starts the season 1-0.
 
Macalester junior Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) put the pressure on the Firebirds' keeper early, before finding the back of the net in the 15^th minute. Off a corner kick from senior Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep), junior Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) got the ball to Haenicke, who buried it into the net. The Scots took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
The second half began with junior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) making a pair of saves to preserve the 1-0 lead. The two teams battled it out, finding outlets up top. However, it was the Scots whose pressure became too much for the Firebirds. In the 86^th minute, junior Nathan Corbett (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) slotted the ball into the back of the net off a perfectly placed pass to the top of the box from first year Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove). Just 20 seconds later, Haenicke tripled the lead, assisted by first year Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery).
 
Macalester's next game will be Sunday Sept 3 at 12:30 p.m. The Scots travel to Indianola, Iowa to face Simpson College.
