Baseball: Concordia Tops Macalester

FARGO, N.D. – The Macalester College baseball team took the drive up to North Dakota for a MIAC doubleheader against the Concordia Cobbers. The Scots fought hard, but fell in both games, 12-5 and 16-2. The Scots are now 15-17 (7-11 MIAC).

The Scots got out to an early lead in game one against the Cobbers. After the first two Scots got on base, and advanced to second and third, junior Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) stepped up to the plate. Mukai smashed a three-run homer into center field, plating senior Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and fellow junior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). Macalester was able to increase its lead with a Cobbers error, allowing first year Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to come home and senior Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) to reach first. A wild pitch advanced Rodriguez to second, and a single up the middle by senior Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) sent Rodriguez home. After the first inning, the Scots held a 5-0 lead. However, Concordia was able to pick up three runs in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth to take the game 12-5. Alexander was 2-for-3 with a run.

In game two, Odom opened the game with a solo home run to go up 1-0. In the first two innings, the Cobbers took a 12-1 lead. First year Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) hit a solo home run in the third, but the Cobbers' lead was too much to overcome. Concordia added four more runs in the game to beat the Scots 16-2. Odom and Jones were both 1-for-2 with a run.

The Scots' next doubleheader is scheduled for Tuesday May 2. The Scots will play Augsburg at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
