Softball: Cardinals Take Two from Scots

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team lost a pair of MIAC games to Saint Mary's University, 9-6 and 5-2 Sunday afternoon. The games, which were scheduled to be played at Saint Mary's, were played at Augsburg in the dome due to poor weather conditions. The Scots drop to 11-14 overall and 3-6 in league play, while the Cardinals improve to 15-13, 7-5 MIAC.

In the first game, Macalester trailed 5-0 after three innings before scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning on a double by junior Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) that plated junior Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon). After Saint Mary's scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Scots pushed four runs across in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-5. Sophomore Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) singled home sophomore Dorri Amundson (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School of San Francisco), Morrical hit a sacrifice fly that plated junior Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood), and senior Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) hit a two-run double that brought home Futchko and sophomore Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South).

The Cardinals added a run in the bottom of the fifth, then Futchko delivered an RBI single to score senior Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to make the score 8-6. Riley Hall led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run for Saint Mary's. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bergin opened with a single and Pedersen followed with her second double of the game to put runners on second and third. But the Cardinals retired the next three batters in order to end the threat and the game. Pedersen, Bergin and Futchko each had two hits to pace the Scots.

The second game started well for Macalester, as Bergin hit a two-run single in the top of the first inning that plated Futchko and Nicholson for a 2-0 lead. Saint Mary's scored a run in the bottom of the first, then tallied three runs in a big third inning to lead 4-2. The Cardinals added a run in the fifth to make the score 5-2. The Scots put runners on base in six of the seven innings but were unable to get on the scoreboard after the first inning despite out-hitting Saint Mary's 8-6. Futchko went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while Pedersen registered two hits in the loss. First year Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) held the Cardinals to one run on two hits over three innings of relief.

Macalester returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, when the Scots host Saint Benedict in another MIAC doubleheader. The first game starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex.
