ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team failed to score a run in a MIAC doubleheader against 17th-ranked Saint Benedict, falling 5-0 and 10-0 Wednesday afternoon at a chilly Macalester Softball Complex. The Scots are now 11-17 overall and 3-9 in league play, while the Bennies improve to 18-4, 9-3 MIAC.
In the first game, Saint Ben's scored two runs in the top of the first inning, another in the third and two more in the seventh. Macalester put a runner on third in the bottom of the third, when senior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) walked and advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. After the next batter struck out, sophomore
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) walked but was thrown out trying to steal second.
Senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) registered the Scots' first hit of the game with a single in the fourth, and Brodine hit a one-out double in the fifth. Sophomore
Dorri Amundson (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School of San Francisco) pinch ran for Brodine and later was thrown out trying to score on a single by junior
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood). In the bottom of the seventh, junior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) doubled with one out for Macalester's fourth hit of the game, but she was stranded there, as Elly Novak retired the final two batters to earn the shutout. First year
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) held the Bennies to a run on three hits over three innings of relief.
Saint Benedict jumped out to a big lead in Game 2, getting a two-run home run from Tori Herren in the first and another two-run homer from Jordyn Swoboda as a part of a six-run second for an 8-0 lead. Single runs in the third and fifth innings made the score 10-0. Meanwhile, the Scots were unable to register a hit off Ellie Peterson over five innings, as Peterson recorded her second career five-inning no-hitter. Church, junior
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and sophomore
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) drew walks off Peterson, who faced 17 batters over five innings.
Macalester is scheduled to play at Concordia College on Saturday, April 22 in another MIAC doubleheader. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
