Baseball: Scots Top Cardinals, 10-7

TUCSON, Ariz. - After a rain delay, the Macalester baseball team came out strong against the Cardinals of Wesleyan University (CT). The Scots put in a huge six run inning and won the game 10-7. Macalester's record is now 4-4.

The Scots kicked off the second inning with six run. Sophomore Evan Burns (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) brought home first year Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Ma./Walt Whitman) with an RBI single for the first run of the game. With bases loaded, junior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) was walked, and Burns scored. Up next, sophomore Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) slammed 3 RBI triple to right field, plating senior Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman), first year Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy), and Odom, to give the Scots a 5-0 lead. Waddells then scored off an RBI single from junior Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon).

The Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Scots quickly answered back with two run in the top of the fifth. First year Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) singled up the middle to bring home Burns. Then, Odom hit a sacrifice fly to plate first year Tommy Ball (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School). In the seventh, Waddell's single brought home Ball and Paulsen to lead 10-4. Wesleyan came back in the ninth with three runs, but Macalester held on to win 10-7.

Senior Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) earned the victory on the mound, while junior Matt Rade (Westbourough, Mass./St. John's) registered the save. Waddell went 3-for-6 and drove in five runs. The Scots totaled 12 hits and drew 14 walks.

Macalester's next games will be Friday March 17. The Scots will play Carthage at 2:30 p,m. CDT and Redlands at 6:00 p.m. CDT at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
