CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team opened play at THE Spring Games in Florida with a 6-1 win over Wisconsin Lutheran and a 5-0 loss to Plymouth State Sunday at Hancock Softball Complex. The results give the Scots a 5-3 record on the season.
In the win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Macalester opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Junior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) led off with a single, moved to third on a pair of bunts and came home on a single to left by senior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep). After the Warriors tied it with a run in the bottom of the second, a grounder by senior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) plated junior
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) from third in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead. Then in the fifth, sophomore
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) led off with a triple and came home on a single by junior
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon). After Brodine singled to move Morrical to third and later stole second, junior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) hit a two-run double to put the Scots ahead, 5-1. Still in the fifth, Katzin hit a double and senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) came all the way around from first to score for a 6-1 lead.
Solid pitching made the lead stand. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) held WLC to a run on two hits while striking out four and walking one in four innings. First year
Maddie Molay (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the save. Pedersen, Bergin and Katzin each delivered two hits to pace the offense.
Against Plymouth State, the Scots managed just four hits off Panthers' pitcher Emily Antrim in a 5-0 loss. Bergin went 2-for-3 at the plate, while junior
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) and sophomore
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) also had hits. First year pitcher
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) made her first collegiate start and allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits while walking three and striking out three in six innings. Church pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
Macalester continues play at THE Spring Games on Monday, March 13, with games against Edgewood at 9:00 a.m. and Ohio Wesleyan at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
