CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team split a pair of games on the second day at THE Spring Games Monday at Hancock Softball Complex. The Scots lost to Edgewood, 10-6 and beat Ohio Wesleyan, 3-2 to move to 6-4 on the season.
The morning game against Edgewood was interrupted by rain multiple times, but the teams were able to complete seven innings. The Eagles took control early with three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second for a 5-0 lead. Macalester responded in the bottom of the second. Junior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) and senior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) started the inning with singles, then junior
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) doubled home both runners. Senior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with another double to plate Church. Still in the second, the Scots loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single by sophomore
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown). A grounder by junior
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) brought home junior
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), then senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) singled to plate Futchko and tie the score at 5-5.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth, when Edgewood put five runs on the board to lead, 10-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Brodine and Pedersen executed a double steal that allowed Pedersen to come home and make the score 10-6. But that's as close as the Scots would get, as the Eagles limited Macalester to one hit the rest of the way.
Pedersen and Brodine each had two hits to lead the offense. First year
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Against Ohio Wesleyan, Katzin followed a single by Bergin with a long home run to leftfield to give the Scots a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Bishops pulled even, scoring two runs with two out in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 2-2. In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Morrical for the go-ahead run. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth with two out and shut out the Bishops on just one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Katzin went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer and two runs batted in, while Futchko and Nicholson each delivered two hits. Jensen started and allowed no runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts over three innings.
Macalester plays New England College at 2:00 p.m. and Bowdoin at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at THE Spring Games.
