Men’s Basketball: Macalester Hits Century Mark in Victory at UW-Stout, 102-93

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Four players scored in double figures, as the Macalester College men's basketball team eclipsed 100 points in a non-conference win at UW-Stout, 102-93 Wednesday evening at Johnson Fieldhouse. The victory gives the Scots a 2-1 record on the young season, while the Blue Devils drop to 2-2.

Junior guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) helped Macalester get off to a good start by scoring the Scots' first nine points of the game for a 9-4 lead. Three-pointers by first year guard Kaden Holdbrook (Palo Alto, Calif./Gunn) and sophomore forward Ryan Brush (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) plus a basket from sophomore forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) pushed the lead to 17-6 with 14 minutes left in the half. UW-Stout rallied, using an 18-8 run to make it a one-point game, 25-24 midway through the half.

Later in the half, with Macalester up 32-29, five straight points from the Blue Devils gave the hosts their first lead since the first two minutes of the game, 34-32 with 6:41 on the clock. The Scots were able to regain the upper hand, with Holdbrook and sophomore guard Eric Wentz (Minot, N.D./Minot) hitting threes to build a 45-39 lead. The advantage grew to as many as eight points before Macalester took a 51-45 edge into halftime. The Scots made nine threes in the first half, including three from deep by Wentz.

A 10-4 spree by the Blue Devils to open the half tied the score at 55-55 with 17:21 to play. Momentum stayed with UW-Stout, as an 8-0 run gave the hosts their largest lead of the game, 71-65 with 9:22 remaining. Seven points by Brush, including a four-point play, and a pair of free throws from both Williams and junior guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) gave the lead back to Macalester, 76-74 with 7:35 left to play. With the game tied at 79-79, the Scots went on a game-changing 16-5 run that put the game out of reach, 95-84 with 1:42 on the clock. Williams scored seven points and Brush made his fifth three-pointer of the game in the run.

Macalester made 7-of-8 from the free throw line the rest of the way, with Gold's free throw with 49 seconds left giving the Scots 100 points for the first time since a 116-87 victory at Saint Mary's on Jan. 13, 2018. Macalester went to the line 33 times, making 28 (84.8 percent) compared to 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) for the Blue Devils.
