Men’s Basketball: Macalester Handles MIT in Boston, 92-72

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) scored 22 points, as the Macalester College men's basketball team defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 92-72 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. The game was played at Boston University's Case Gym. The win is the third in a row for the Scots, who improve to 3-1 on the season. The Engineers fall to 2-2.

In the first half MIT held a small lead for most of the first 15 minutes of the game. With the Engineers up 34-31, a three-pointer by junior guard and Massachusetts native Tom Andreae (Newton, Mass./Newton North) made a three-pointer to tie the score at 34-34 with 7:17 left in the half. MIT's Spencer Lin answered with a pair of threes sandwiched around a basket by Will Bland to put the Engineers on top, 42-34 at the 4:26 mark. Looking to close out the half strong, the Scots used a three from first year guard Kaden Holdbrook (Palo Alto, Calif./Gunn) and five points by sophomore guard Eric Wentz (Minot, N.D./Minot) to ignite a 14-0 run for a 48-42 advantage with just over a minute to play in the half. Williams also hit a three in the run, with the Macalester defense holding MIT without a point for 3:14. After the Engineers made a three-pointer, Holdbrook threw down a dunk just before the buzzer to make the halftime score 50-45 Scots.

Out of the break, Macalester picked up where it left off in the first half, as a basket by sophomore forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and a conventional three-point play from Williams gave the Scots a 10-point lead, 55-45. Seven straight points by MIT brought the Engineers to within three, 55-52 with 16:24 to play. The lead was four, 60-56 with 15 minutes remaining when Macalester reeled off a 15-6 spree that started with a three from junior guard Marcus Crawford (Edina, Minn./Edina) and ended with a trey by Andreae at the 11-minute mark for a 70-58 bulge. MIT came as close as eight points but the Scots controlled play the rest of the way in taking a 92-72 victory in Boston.

After scoring 102 points and making 14 threes in a 102-93 win at UW-Stout on Wednesday, Macalester drained 15 three-pointers in 35 attempts (42.9 percent) on Saturday while earning a 40-29 advantage in rebounding. The Scots also dished out a season-best 22 assists in today's win.

Williams scored 14 of his game-high 22 points after halftime while contributing four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the game. Holdbrook finished with 14 points, five boards and four assists, while Wentz and Crawford each registered 11 points. Crawford's performance, which included 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, is a career high. Shannon grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds, with junior guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) recording seven assists to go with seven points and six rebounds.

Macalester returns home to begin MIAC play on Tuesday, Nov. 21 with a game against Concordia College. The game starts at 7:15 p.m. following the women's game at 5:15 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
