ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 1-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Saints drop to 0-10-1, 0-4-1 MIAC.
Macalester struck first in the 22nd minute, when senior forward
Mia Brisbin (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School) sent a through ball up the middle to spring first year forward
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston). Hanson outran her defender and blasted a shot into the left side of the goal for her team-leading fifth tally of the season and a 1-0 Scots lead. Just before halftime, first year forward
Avery Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had an excellent scoring chance that was saved by Gracie Meagher.
Macalester kept up the pressure in the second half, with senior midfielder
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) putting a couple of shots just over the crossbar and Brisbin hitting the crossbar from distance in the 60th minute. Elena Davidson's shot off a St. Scholastica corner kick in the 69th minute went just high as the Saints pressed for the equalizer. In the 85th minute, the Saints had a free kick just outside the penalty area but hit the wall with the shot. With time running down, a chance by St. Scholastica was snuffed out by first year goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) as she beat Tenley Voth to a loose ball near the top of the penalty area.
Heuga registered two saves on the day for her fifth shutout of the season. Meagher made three saves for the Saints, as the Scots held a 12-5 advantage in shots.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a key match at Carleton College on Tuesday, Oct. 10, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
