ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team hosted Saint Mary's in its final home matchup of the regular season. Despite calling the game after 79 minutes of play due to lightning, the Scots put on a strong performance, defeating the Cardinals 4-0. The Scots improve to 10-2-4 (5-2-2 MIAC).
In the fifth minute, first year midfielder
Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) took a nice shot from the top of the box that was saved by the Cardinals' goalkeeper. Fellow first year midfielder
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) also forced a save from the Cardinals' keeper in the 19
th minute. The Scots played well, limiting Saint Mary's chances and were able to take the lead in the 30
th minute. Off a direct kick, Edelman slotted the ball between the goalkeeper and near post. The Scots took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Blattman extended Macalester's lead to two in the 49
th minute, after redirecting a blocked shot of Edelman's. Seven minutes later junior forward
Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) tripled the lead, beating his defenders and blasting the ball in the net. In the 63
rd, Macalester tacked on its fourth goal, when first year forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) got a foot on the ball off a cross from fellow first year forward
Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery). With 10:19 left on the clock, the game was called due to lightning. As per NCAA rules, since the teams played over 70 minutes, the game ends and the Scots take the win, 4-0.
Macalester plays its last regular season game on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Scots head to Minneapolis to face Augsburg.
