Men’s Soccer: Scots Cruise to 3-1 Win Over Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn.  –  Outshooting their opponent 33 to 2, the Macalester men's soccer team cruised to victory over Hamline this afternoon at Macalester Stadium. With a score of 3-1, the Scots improve to 9-2-4 (4-2-2 MIAC)).

Macalester put pressure on the Pipers early, with first year midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) and junior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) taking their chances at goal. Senior forward Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) and Haenicke then had their shots saved halfway through the first half. The Scots were rewarded for their relentless pressure in the 33rd minute. First year forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) crossed the ball into the box, and Haenicke was right there to tap it between the goalkeeper's legs and go up 1-0 before the break.

In the second, Haenicke had the assist on the goal to double the lead. In the 55th minute, first year forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) got a touch on Haenicke's cross to put the ball into the back of the net and double the lead, 2-0. The Pipers got a goal back in the 77th minute off a penalty. However, Hamline gave up a penalty to the Scots in the 84th minute, and first year midfielder Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) stepped up and buried the ball into the net. Macalester took the game 3-1.

Today, the Scots honored their three seniors, Sciortino, Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School), and Sam Menicke (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish). Macalester returns 31 to the field next fall.

Macalester comes back to Macalester Stadium for its final home game in the regular season. The Scots host Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Oct 24.
