ST. PAUL, Minn. – Outshooting their opponent 33 to 2, the Macalester men's soccer team cruised to victory over Hamline this afternoon at Macalester Stadium. With a score of 3-1, the Scots improve to 9-2-4 (4-2-2 MIAC)).
Macalester put pressure on the Pipers early, with first year midfielder
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) and junior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) taking their chances at goal. Senior forward
Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) and Haenicke then had their shots saved halfway through the first half. The Scots were rewarded for their relentless pressure in the 33
rd minute. First year forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) crossed the ball into the box, and Haenicke was right there to tap it between the goalkeeper's legs and go up 1-0 before the break.
In the second, Haenicke had the assist on the goal to double the lead. In the 55
th minute, first year forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) got a touch on Haenicke's cross to put the ball into the back of the net and double the lead, 2-0. The Pipers got a goal back in the 77
th minute off a penalty. However, Hamline gave up a penalty to the Scots in the 84
th minute, and first year midfielder
Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) stepped up and buried the ball into the net. Macalester took the game 3-1.
Today, the Scots honored their three seniors, Sciortino,
Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School), and
Sam Menicke (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish). Macalester returns 31 to the field next fall.
Macalester comes back to Macalester Stadium for its final home game in the regular season. The Scots host Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Oct 24.
