ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester women's soccer team went just down the road this afternoon for a MIAC contest against St. Catherine. The Scots were able to cut the Wildcats' lead in the second, but their efforts fell short, as Macalester lost 3-1. Macalester's record is now 8-6 (5-3 MIAC), while St. Kate's improves to 12-3 (7-1 MIAC).
The Wildcats threatened the Scots early, forcing first year goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) to make three saves in the first 15 minutes of the game. However, St. Kate's was able to put one past Macalester in the 20
th minute for a 1-0 lead. First year forward
Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) and junior forward
Caighley Espardinez (Camarillo, Calif./Rancho Campana) each created opportunities late in the half for the Scots, but had their shots saved by the Wildcats' goalkeeper.
The Wildcats doubled their lead in the 52
nd minute. The Scots responded quickly. In the 59
th minute, Nhouyvanisvong put the ball into the net off an assist from senior midfield/forward
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), cutting the lead to 2-1. However, the Wildcats would score again in the 68
th minute and maintain the 3-1 lead to the end of the game. Heuga made 14 saves throughout the game on 24 shots faced.
The Scots come back to Macalester Stadium for its next game on Wed Oct 18. Macalester hosts Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m.
