Volleyball: Macalester Falls to Saint Benedict Despite Fast Start

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team dropped a MIAC match to one of the conference leaders in Saint Benedict, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Bennies (13-4) remain unbeaten in the MIAC with a 6-0 record.

Macalester got off to a blazing start, reeling off the first 12 points of the first set. Sophomore right side Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) notched three kills in the run that also saw Saint Benedict record five attack errors. The match flip flopped from there, as the Bennies recorded just one attack error the rest of the way, compared to 10 for Macalester, in outscoring the Scots 25-4 to take the set, 25-16.

In the second set, Macalester fell behind, 20-12 before battling back to make the score 22-17 with two kills from first year outside hitter MiLani Terrell (Cypress, Texas/Tomball Memorial) and another by junior outside hitter Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen). But the Bennies scored three of the final four points to win Set 2, 25-18. Saint Benedict dominated the third set with 11 kills against just two errors in taking a 25-11 victory for the sweep.

Terrell and junior middle blocker Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) led the Scots with five kills apiece. Geber added five total blocks to pace the defense. First year setter Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) had 20 assists and 10 digs, while junior libero Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) recorded 13 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Bohrer (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) had 10 digs. Kali Jones led Saint Benedict with 10 kills on the night.

Macalester hosts Carleton in a key MIAC match on Friday, Oct. 13. The Scots will honor former coach Stephanie Schleuder before and after the match, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
