Men’s Soccer: Macalester Topples Concordia in First MIAC Matchup of the Season

| By:
Box Score Moorhead, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team played its first conference opponent of the season this evening. The Scots travelled to Moorhead to take on the Concordia. After going down one, the Scots came back and won 4-2. Macalester is now 2-2-2 (1-0-0 MIAC).

Both teams shot early and often in the match. Junior Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) and senior Milosz Fernandez-Kepka (Las Vegas, Nev./Indiana University HS) put the Cobbers under pressure, forcing saves from the keeper. However, it was Concordia who would find the back of the net first in the 13th minute. The Cobbers' lead wouldn't last long, as Fernandez-Kepka scored in the 24th minute to level the playing field. Concordia both continued its offensive strikes, but sophomore goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) and the Macalester defense kept the Cobbers from scoring, and went into halftime with a 1-1 score line.

Just over a minute into the second half, Price made a save that kept the game tied. This was a crucial save because a minute later Macalester gained the advantage. Sophomore Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./ Ballard) scored off an assist from first year Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) in the 48th minute to take the lead. Macalester continued to gain momentum and scored another goal in the 60th minute. Fernandez-Kepka tallied an assist as sophomore Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) blasted the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-1. The Cobbers tried to make a comeback by reducing the Scots' lead to one in the 63rd minute but the Scots maintained their lead. To finalize the win, first year Parker Etzbach (Danbury, Conn./Wooster School) scored his first collegiate goal, for a 4-2 Macalester victory. Junior Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School/Davis Legacy) assisted Etzbach.

The Scots' next game will be Saturday, Sept. 17. Macalester hosts Augsburg at 3:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
