DUNDAS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team erased a 5-0 deficit and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 to earn a split with Concordia College Saturday night at the Dundas Dome. The Scots are now 13-19 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while the Cobbers are now 7-17, 1-9 MIAC.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between Macalester first year
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) and Concordia ace Megan Gavin. The two teams combined for just five hits, with the Cobbers scoring the game's only run, an unearned run in the top of the first inning, for a 1-0 win. Pistorius held the Cobbers to an unearned run on two hits while striking out seven and walking four in seven innings. Gavin also went the distance, blanking the Scots on three hits while fanning nine and walking one. Sophomores
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkland) and
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon), and first year
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) had the Macalester hits.
Concordia broke through in the first inning of Game 2 with five unearned runs. The Scots scored a run in the bottom of the first when Church came home on an error, then junior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to make the score 5-3. In the fourth, Katzin and Futchko singled and Church walked to load the bases for senior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia), who roped a two-run double to right to tie the score at 5-5. Junior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with a grounder that brought home Church for a 6-5 lead.
The Cobbers scored a run on a walk, a double and a passed ball in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 6-6. The score remained deadlocked heading into the bottom of the seventh. Clarke led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a grounder by Brodine. With one out and Church batting, Gavin threw a pitch high over the catcher and into the backstop. Clarke raced home from third and slid under the tag for the game-winning run.
Pistorius pitched all seven innings, allowing six unearned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking three. Katzin had a pair of hits, and Church scored two runs in the win.
Macalester will play St. Scholastica in a MIAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 24. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m. at Superior High School.
