Baseball: Scots Put on Power Clinic Against Augsburg

St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team hosted a MIAC doubleheader today against Augsburg. The Scots put up multiple home runs on the day in the two-game victory. Macalester improves to 8-13 (4-4 MIAC), while Augsburg drops to 10-15 (2-6 MIAC).

In game one, the Scots started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Junior Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) singled to bring home first year Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Then Macalester put up two runs in the fifth. Leadoff hitter, senior Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), hit a solo home run to double the Scots' lead. Later in the inning, sophomore Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) reached home plate due to an Augsburg error. Macalester kept the lead and win 3-0. First year Quinn Hodgman (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) pitched the full seven innings, limiting the Auggies to only three hits. Hodgman also struck out nine batters.

Game two became a home run clinic for the Scots, smashing three out of the park. After going down 1-0 in the first, Moreno hit his second solo home run of the day to tie the game. The Auggies reclaimed the lead in the second, 2-1, but first year Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) blasted his first collegiate home run to left field to level the game once again in the third. After back-to-back hits for Macalester, sophomore Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) reached first on a fielder's choice and tallied an RBI to plate senior Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage). After a single and a walk for the Scots, senior Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) stepped up to bat with bases loaded. Helton crushed the ball out of the park for a grand slam and gave the Scots a 7-2 lead at the end of the third.

Augsburg put up a run in the fourth, cutting the lead to four. However, Macalester's bats remained hot and the Scots put in another six-run inning. Odom doubled to right field to score Wingard and Lincoln. Another double for the Scots, by Mukai, brought home two more runners for Macalester. The Scots added to their score with Mukai, who reached home off another Augsburg error and Helton, who scored off a double from first year Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). At the bottom of the fourth, the Scots led 13-3. Senior Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) hit an RBI single through the left side, scoring Moreno, in the fifth to top off Macalester's runs at 14. Augsburg registered one more run in the sixth, but the Scots' powerful bats were too much for the Auggies and Macalester won 14-4.

Macalester totaled four home runs and 15 RBI's on the day. Moreno went 3-for-5 on the day scoring four runs and registering an RBI. Mukai went 3-for-4 in game two scoring twice and tallying two RBI's. Helton totaled four RBI's and scored twice in game two as well.

The Scots' next game is scheduled for Wednesday April 20. Macalester will head to Northfield to play St. Olaf at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for a MIAC double header.
