ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split a pair of one-run games with Saint Mary's University in a MIAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Macalester Softball Complex. The Scots, who won the first game, 4-3 before losing Game 2, 6-5, are now 10-16 record overall and 4-6 in the conference. The Cardinals are now 12-10 overall, 5-6 MIAC.
In the first game, Macalester answered a Saint Mary's run in the top of the first inning with a solo home run by junior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) in the bottom of the second. The Scots broke the tie in the bottom of the third, as senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal) led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by first year
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and scored on a flyout and an error for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Bergin scored again on a grounder and an error to make the score 3-1. The Cardinals tied the score with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Bergin led off with a double to right centerfield and advanced to third on a wild pitch. First year
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) stepped up and hit a one-out, walk-off single to plate Bergin with the game-winning run.
Bergin went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the Macalester offense. First year
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) went the distance in the circle, holding Saint Mary's to three unearned runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three to earn the win.
The Scots jumped out in front in Game 2 with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Katzin and Nicholson had RBI singles, while sophomore
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch. The Cardinals put four runs on the board in the top of the third, then tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Saint Mary's advanced a runner to third and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Macalester went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkland) went 3-for-3 while junior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) had two hits and scored a run. Sophomore
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Scots return to action on Tuesday, April 19 with a conference twinbill at No. 18 Saint Benedict, starting at 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph, Minn.
