St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team played the University of Northwestern today. The game went into 10 innings, but the Scots pulled out the victory 10-9. Macalester is now 4-13 (0-4 MIAC).
The Scots started the game strong with sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) blasting a three-run homer, bringing home junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) and senior
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) to give Macalester a 3-0 lead. The Eagles scored two in the second but the Scots answered right back. Moreno smashed a two-run homerun to left field, increasing the Scots' lead to 5-2. In the third, junior
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) put up another run for the Scots, 6-2.
Northwestern would put up runs in the next three innings to tie the game at six. In the second half of the sixth inning, junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) singled to bring home Moreno and regain the lead, 7-6. Yet, the Eagles took the lead right back at the top of the seventh, 9-7. Odom stepped up in the bottom of the seventh and crushed his second homer of the game for two runs to tie the game at nine. At the end of nine innings, the game was still tied and went into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Odom advanced to third on a wild pitch and then ran home off an Eagles' error to win the game for Macalester 10-9.
Odom went 3-for-5 on the day, smashing two home runs for five RBIs and scoring the winning run for the Scots. Moreno hit a homerun for two RBIs. Rodriguez had 11 put outs in the game. First year
Ryan Przespolewski (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge) pitched the final three innings and kept Northwestern off the scoreboard, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three without a walk to earn his first collegiate win.
The Scots' next game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12. The Scots head to Northfield for a MIAC doubleheader against St. Olaf at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
